At the recent press conference with Wilfried Martens after a meeting with Yanukovych, to the laughter of the press audience Martens told that he repeatedly had to remind Yanukovych about the topic (the Tymoshenko trial) of their discussions. Yanukovych apparently was not paying much attention to what Martens tried to say to him. Similarly, after the two hour meeting at the Yalta conference, between Yanukovych, Stefan Fuele, Carl Bildt and Elmar Brok which was almost entirely devoted to the Tymoshenko trial, the Swedish foreign minister Bildt could only report that they had delivered a very clear message to Yanukovych and he had listened to it. But if in fact this will lead to anything at all, Bildt expressed his uncertainty. The hint made by Yanukovych of the need to review the criminal code seems only to be another delaying tactic. Evidently, Yanukovych not only did belive EU would sign and ratify association and trade agreements with Ukraine, despite the fact that he has jailed several of the members of the former government on flimsy procedural charges, but he still believes he will get away with it. One positive result with pressure from EU and USA can be expected though: Yanukovych is now likely to refrain from throwing Turchynov and Yatsenyuk in jail!Bernardnoreply@blogger.com
